KEY PEOPLE BEHIND TWYDIL

Roger Crozet, General Manager, Pavesco AG

Roger Crozet completed his doctor´s degree in veterinary medicine in Toulouse in 1977. He spent the next three years as a volunteer for technical assistance on Reunion Island, where he acquired practical experience for tropical pathologies and horses´ conditions of adaptation to very hot climate. In search for higher qualification, he moved to the USA, where he was appointed as a ”visiting professor” at the University of West-Lafayette (Indiana). There he spent three years teaching in the faculty of Horse Medicine and Surgery and in the faculty of Histology, where he took part in various research programmes.

Drawing on this additional training, he decided to put his knowledge into practice. Malta was his first destination with thousands of race and leisure horses. While working in his horse clinic he was appointed the commercial agricultural attaché at the French Embassy, too. Then he felt it was time ready for him to settle down in Cagnessur- Mer, where he purchased the vetrinary practise at the local race course and, over the years, built up a team of 9 colleagues and invested to the newest technological equipment. Meanwhile he spent two years in Bahrain as veterinary doctor of the horses of the Emir, visited many Gulf Countries as an equine specialist, and went again to USA to qualify in Chinese acupuncture for horses. He has held the position of a General Manager of TWYDIL for more than eight years.

Dr. Brieuc de Моffarts is responsible for quality of TWYDIL since 2005. He is working as a Senior researcher on equine sport medicine, biochemistry and nutrition at the University of Liège, too.

ANTIDOPING PRECAUTIONS, HOW IS EACH TWYDIL® BATCH OF FEED SUPPLEMENTS TESTED:

1. REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLE

During the manufacturing process samples are taken at the different stages of production and mixed, following a precise method, to obtain a final test sample as representative as possible of the whole batch.

2. THE LCH SEARCHES FOR CONTAMINANTS IN THE FINAL PRODUCT

The LCH checks that, even at the limits of detection, the final product is free from all the 10 natural contaminants (morphine, atropine, butofenine, caffeine, theophylline, theobromine, scopolamine, methylbufotenine, dimethyltriptamine, hordenine) for which vigilance must be maximum, because of their possible presence in feed ingredients.

3. A HORSE FED WITH AN OVERDOSE OF THE FINAL PRODUCT

The Laboratory of Hormonology in Marloie, Belgium, directed by Dr Philippe Delahaut, follows a strict and precise protocol of quality control experiment (specific for each product). Under this protocol, the Laboratory gives a horse 3 times the normal dosage of the product for a minimum of 3 days. Samples of urine and blood are taken and sent to the LCH.

4. THE LCH ANALYSES THE BLOOD OF THE HORSE

The LCH submits the blood to a complete screening for all the prohibited substances (stimulants, analgesics, narcotics, anabolic steroids, beta-blockers, diuretics and not just the likely contaminants).

5. THE LCH ESTABLISHES A TRIPLE ANTI-DOPING CONTROL CERTIFICATE

6. SAMPLES SEALED

A sealed urine sample is kept refrigerated by the Laboratory of Marloie for one year beyond the expiry date of the product and TWYDIL® keeps in Switzerland a sealed sample of the final product for the same period.

INTEGRATED NUTRITION

A NEW EQUINE CONCEPT

For many years the feed management of production animals has been carefully “integrated” to maximise output. Integration means that every nutritional component in the feed intake, including the essential supplementation, has to be optimised.

Performance horses are athletes and they also require sophisticated feed management in order to promote the best possible performance. It is well known that performance is determined by several parameters including genetic structure, training and various environmental factors. Feed management is just one of these factors that can limit performance.

Without going too deeply into the science, good feeding is fundamental to horses’ health and well-being and the following points should be noted:

Optimum energy intake for foals and young horses is determined by the growth curve whereas in older horses it is dependent on body score and the performance required. Energy is particularly important for movement.
Good fibre intake is essential preferably in the form of top quality hay with access to pasture or alfalfa (lucerne) where possible. The main component of fibre is cellulose which, because of its structure, helps regulate the passage of feed through the gut and also promotes intestinal fermentation.
Protein intake from the feed components must be taken into account.
Usually, most of the required minerals are contained in the basic feed. Even so it is important to control the ratio of calcium to phosphorus and the magnesium intake.
Every category of horses, according to physiological stage of development or discipline, requires a supply of micronutrients: 14 vitamins and 7 trace elements in the right amounts to meet their needs.

It is important to ensure the feed includes a variety of materials to encourage appetite, maintain good gut flow, promote intestinal fermentation and bioavailability of all macro- and micro-nutrients.
